How to store coffee beans at home?
First, you need to know the greatest enemy of your beans.
1. Air
2. Light
3. Moisture
4. Heat
Sounds irony right? As these elements are important in growing the beans themselves. But why? Let’s explain.
1. Air
The number 1 enemy of fresh coffee beans. To be specific, it’s the oxygen in the air. When the beans are exposed to air, it will only take a few days for your beans to lose their flavour. It is because, oxygen leads to oxidation, the process that turns your apple into brown colour.
To avoid this, don’t expose your beans to air. You can use air-tight can or jar.
But the best solution is to vacuum seal your beans. Nip the cause of oxidation in the bud!
2. Light
Especially sunlight, it contains UV light that can activate chemical reaction with the beans, causing the loss of coffee flavour.
Worse to the worst, UV light speeds up the oxidation process!
Solution: Avoid using transparent container to store your beans, you can use a dark, air-tight jar.
3. Moisture
Moisture can cause your beans to go bad rapidly. Moisture leads the growth of mould and causes your beans to rot.
4. Heat
The oil and other components in the beans can evaporate faster at high temperature and brings bad taste to your beans. Imagine drinking coffee that made from stale beans.
To secure the aroma of your beans, avoid storing them in hot environment or near to heat source, such as a cabinet near the oven, kitchen counter that gets strong afternoon sun and somewhere near the fridge.
Make sure you are storing them in a dark, cool place.
But if you want to preserve maximum flavor for a longer period of time especially for super rare and precious bean you deeply loved : use vacuum!
This can keep moisture away from your beans, limits light exposure, decrease air movement, decrease temperature fluctuations. And with some correct storing tips, you will have your beans as fresh as when you bought it.
Here’s some tips for vacuum sealing and freezing.
#1 Putting portion-size amounts into your vacuum sealed bags
So that you won’t expose all your beans to air and moisture when it’s time for a cup of joe.
#2 Take out a bag of beans from the freezer the night before you want them.
So that they’re at room temperature before you make a brew.
What place to AVOID when you store your beans
1. Coffee’s retail packaging
It is generally not ideal for long-term storage. If possible, invest in a dark storage canisters with an airtight seal.
2. Storing in chiller
Fridges contain damp foods with odors that can devastate the beans.
So, everything we’ve told you might seem obvious, but it can still be quite difficult to keep all of the elements under control. Of course, there are solutions that make it easier for you.
IMPORTANT NOTE!
The easiest way to preserve the coffee bean you deeply loved is to finish them and ask your roaster to fresh roast new batch for you.
